"Once a Pancake... Always a Pancake"
Independent Thesis Project
"From the Jemimas to the Jezabels, popular use of these characters and those alike have concealed my identity as a black woman, leaving a figure preserved through our American history. Lack of social value and opportunity has held me to be seen as a modern mammy."
This is a personal project I had the opportunity to work on for my BFA thesis. Nine months of research, interviews, critiques and personal analysis concluded with an exhibition featuring my work alongside my peers.
This two part piece contains an
overwhelmingly large stack of pancakes encased in resin and a video of me pouring the same batter used to make the pancakes over my body. The audio is played from inside the pancake tower which muffles my personal narrative on being a black women.
